Galway Docks is located within walking distance of Galway City Centre and is run by the Galway Harbour Company. The port of Galway Docks is centrally located on the west coast of Ireland and is in an ideal location to service Limerick, over to Athlone and up as far as Donegal. It is also the port used by the majority of our research vessels including the Celtic Explorer. At the moment it facilitates the large demand for leisure vessels within the present Docks area. In 2002 the port received planning permission for a 26 berth leisure facility and is in the process of planning this with a strong emphasis on accommodating our traditional crafts like the Galway Hookers and other facilities for the tourist such as angling, sailing excursions and yachting. Galway was selected as a stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race in 2008-09 and Galway Docks will be the central location used for the boats.
